Dishonor

I stopped watching television in 2016 as a personal choice and I have not missed that noise. Recently, I was working in a client’s home for several hours. Their TV was on and the program was a reality soap-opera type platform. I could see the word, “Bravo” in the corner of the screen. The show featured real estate agents, or actors portraying agents, working deals to sell million dollar properties. Their flip dialogue was punctuated with sighs, sarcastic remarks, and dramatic moments of expressed frustration. This seemingly staged formula repeated every 30 minutes in consecutive episodes.

At one point, the language caught my attention and I turned toward the TV screen. An agent was upset that the deal he offered was not accepted, and he exploded with, “Jesus Christ!” I watched these players speak nonchalantly as though reading words in a script. Our Savior’s Name was verbalized several times through the episodes, as an expression of frustration or anger. Immediate indignation mixed with deep sadness flooded my heart. Profound heaviness in my spirit struck me full force; a combination of horror mixed with fury. How dare they speak the Name of Jesus with such disrespect? How dare they use His Name with such callous disregard for His Majesty and Sovereignty? “O LORD!”, I cried out silently.

A little later, the client returned to the living room and changed the channel. I did not listen to the program, until I heard a heated exchange on the screen between two male actors. I turned my head to observe the scene. One man was yelling at the other in authority, pointing his finger as he spoke for emphasis, and said, “I am your Lord God Almighty and you will bow before me and do as I say!” I stood without moving, as sudden fear erupted for the words I had just heard. This cheap dialogue was blasphemy of the scriptures. Using God’s Holy Word defiantly in mockery of the true Savior, could only come from one source, a created defeated being who has deceived the world and filled mouths with defilement against God.

A few days ago I listened to a short clip of someone speaking at a rally about life, and a woman expressed her opinion while shouting the Lord’s Name in vain. The lost foolishly speak words of damnation about the only One who can save their soul. They are dead without Christ, and too many are unprepared for eternity. My spirit was burdened through the evening. I shared it all with God in prayer, in quietness, then in praise.

The entertainment industry, for decades, has glamorized evil, sin, and rebellion against what is honorable, just, and true. The old movies of yesteryear romanticized infidelity, self-indulgence, and even murder, but now seem tame in comparison to the blatant demonic influence displayed on the screen. The Book of Ecclesiastes reminds us that there is nothing new under the sun. The devil has used the same tactics for centuries. Our Hope remains the same–Jesus Christ, who has already won the war through His birth, death, and resurrection. His power has not changed and He has authority over every enemy. He is our Warrior King, our Anchor, our Light, our Rock and Firm Foundation. Prayer and praise continue.

I Peter 1:24-25, “For, all men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord stands forever.”
